John Perez (36-19) of Revere Massachusetts defeated former world champion Mike Naidus of Los Angeles California four games to none in the world series. The Star Tournaments National Championship was held at Harrah's Casino on the strip in Las Vegas January 18-20. Perez defeated Jeff Watson four games to three in the semi-finals and two-time world champion Bill Meinhardt four games to three in the quarter-finals to reach the final. Naidus defeated the co-managers Mike Cohen and Eric Wayne four games to none in the semi-finals and Dan Martin four games to three in the quarter-finals to reach the finals.
Perez started out 10-12 and then won 14 of his last 15 in divisional play to finish 24-13 and edged out 2001 Star Tournaments points champion Don Leong for a place in the final eight.
The final eight consisted of division winners Dan Martin, Jeff Watson, John Perez, Bill Jempty, co-managers Mike Cohen and Eric Wayne, and Bill Meinhardt. Entering the field of eight as second place wild-card shootout winners were Don Leong and Mike Naidus.
The field of 51 was the second largest ever for a Star Tournaments National Championship Tournament.
