Eric Wayne (33-17) of Southfield Michigan defeated Bryan Lewis (27-20) of Erie Pennsylvania four games to none in the world series final of Star Tournaments world championship tournament.
The field of 52 was the second largest in Star Tournaments illustrious history topped only by the 61 in Las Vegas two years ago. The tournament was held in the heart of the French quarter in a banquet room overlooking Bourbon Street.
On his way to his championship, Wayne defeated Willy Dominguez in a dramatic seven games semi-final series and Rob Woodard four games to one in the quarter-finals. Wayne defeated Dominguez 1-0 in the seventh game of the semi-finals on an eighth inning home run to move on to the world series.
Lewis defeated Vince Velten four games to two in the semi-finals and Joe Sheehan four games to three in the quarter-finals. Lewis came back from a 3-8 start to finish second in his division and won two wild card shootouts to gain a spot in the playoffs. After his dramatic come back to get into the world series, Lewis's bats went cold in the world series as he could score only three runs in four games.
Willy Dominguez defeated Don Leong four games to two in a quarter-final matchup and Vince Velten defeated Marshall Palmer four games to two in a quarter-final series.
Don Leong, Marshall Palmer, Eric Wayne, Joe Sheehan, Vince Velten and Rob Woodard all won their divisions to gain a position in the quarter-finals. Lewis also defeated two former world champions and second place finishers Stan Suderman and Mark Giddings in the wild card shootout round to gain his place in the quarter-finals.
Wayne also captured the points championship, edging Sean Riley 187-163 in one of the closest points races in years. Five other players had at least 156 points. Wayne earned 101 of his points in the finals to overtake Riley and several others.
Riley edged out Wayne .634 to .628 to capture the Star Tournaments winning percentage title.
